The Comparison

Psalm 16:4 Their sorrow shall be multiplied that hasten after another god

&&

Psalm 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

how can i say this how its on my heart?  i have hastened (def. Moved rapidly; accelerated; urged with speed.)  after other Gods.  and its so true of a picture of idolatry. we run and accelerate to things that we think are going to satisfy us, its only a natural urge. but when we move toward these things  - our sorrows only get multiplied.

do we REALLY comprehend what is involved when we say multiplied sorrows?

multiplied; Greek râbâh A primitive root; to increase (in whatever respect): - [bring in] abundance  sorrows; Greek ‛atstsebeth an idol; also a pain or wound: - sorrow, wound.

Funny how, sorrows means idol and pain. multiplied idols mean multiplied pain. the root of the greek word used for sorrows is ‛âtsab  A primitive root; properly to carve, that is, fabricate or fashion; hence (in a bad sense) to worry, pain or anger: - displease, grieve, hurt, make, be sorry, vex, worship, wrest

Our idols – no matter what they may be; TV, drinking, tabacoo, fun,  ANYTHING. our idols anger THE God. Our idols seperate us from THE God. to be seperated from God means satan has control over us. and satan puts us in a place of pain. emptiness. loneliness.  our idols do NOTHING to fill the void inside. but we hasten after our other god and our sorrows are mulitplied. our greif is multiplied. our pain, worries, emptiness, they all are multiplied. then in turn our idols are multiplied because we are searching for more things to fill the void that gets bigger and bigger. ive been there. there is nothing ive written that i have experianced first hand. but there is a flip side.

Psalm 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

The path of life. whew, if u know God, if u walk with Him u can really get excited over just seeing the path of life written in the Word, because God really does show us what life is truely about. in His presence we have fullness of joy. all those voids that our idols pour into us are washed away and the blood of Jesus provides us with joy unspeakable and FULL of glory. even in the midst of trials. persecution. famine. death. God is right there and we have an unmovable rock to lean on and a peace that passes ALL understanding. who can understand it? who can understand how a child of God can take the biggest blow to their life and yet have their mind and their heart kept in peace by Jesus Christ. no wonder we yearn to serve him! no wonder we have this natural attraction to fill a void because we have in our reach the most amazing, powerful, willing King. praise God! halleluiah! i know why the saints of old would shout around the altar cause they got a hold of this!

At Gods right hand ..who is at the right hand? Jesus. in Jesus there are pleasures for evermore! isnt that what we are all looking for? pleasure? but im not saying that thats why we should serve God – we serve him because he is worthy.” Happiness is a BY PRODUCT of serving God – not a prime product.”  (youtube - revival hymn)

i dont know where else to go with this. i hope that u can see the contrast and see where u are in relation to it. the idols wont hold up their end of the bargain – i assure you. trust in the Lord – there is no regret in that, i know from experiance.

  1. I read this book called the heart of anger by Lou Priolio. It's such a good book. I really need to get my hands on it again and read it. But anyway, in the book it talks about the idols of our hearts. If you have to be constantly entertained, or you always have to be playing video games or watching movies, then the idol, I think was being selfish or self gratification. They listed so many like pride, envy, jealousy, etc. Anyway, I always thought idols were objects like the TV or the computer, which they can be..but it turns out idols are really anything that we do that takes the place of God. Wanting to be number one is an idol. Wanting to look perfect is an idol. Caring what people think of you more than what God thinks of you is an idol. I just wanted to add this to the discussion because often times people think "well I don't love the TV more than God" and so they think they are good. Really, we all have idols in our hearts that need to be broken down and thrown out.

  3. I think it's interesting to note, that idols are all man made. No matter if they are objects, attitudes, feelings, etc. They all come from us. Great post, I think this is an area that isn't mentioned enough. When someone truly falls in love with Christ, they will remove all other idols. Check out Psalm 115:4-8, it goes along with the discussion of idols.

  4. Mercy! I admit I have been here, too. I know first hand that the idols won't hold their end of the bargain. It does seem that these idols are all a mere distraction from God. Distraction has to be Satan's favorite tool. Sometimes we don't even realize it and sometimes we purposefully want it. Do you know what I'm saying? Awesome post. Thanks for being real.
